WonderCon 09! [And the rest of my weekend]

On the way to Napa Valley on Saturday, to support my dad in the Napa Valley Marathon, we stopped by in San Fransisco for WonderCon! I forgot my iPhone at home, so my dad had took some pictures with his. While my sister and mom went shopping, my dad and I went to WonderCon, the annual convention for comics and pop culture held annually in San Francisco. It was huge! Mainly, because it was a Saturday though. It was really crowded around the booths, with people selling posters, comics, figures, cosplay stuff and more, people promoting upcoming movies, games and comics, and actors and writers signing and showing off their latest works. There were so many nerds, too! Over-confident nerds, anime nerds, comic book nerds, Star Wars nerds, TV show nerds, video game nerds, ones with good costumes, ones with not-so-good costumes and ones with normal clothes, but looked like they were wearing costumes. Families, couples, single people (duh) and members of press, video and written. It was pretty awesome.

First the celebrities. Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, actors who played Luke and Leia Skywalker were there and so was Felicia Day from The Guild, they had large lines, so I bother using the last hour of my two hours there for them :( . There were people my dad knew, too. Michelle Scarabelli, from Alien Nation and Star Trek: The Next Generation was there, with no one currently at her booth, so my dad got her autograph for him and my mom and they also chatted. C. Andrew Nelson, an actor for Darth Vader in Star Wars V, Richard Kiel, actor for Jaws in James Bond and Adam Baldwin, who played Jayne Cobb in Firefly and Serenity.

We bought some things, too, including for me, an really well done and dark art book called The After Life by Ruben Martinez, which I got him to sign. Video, by Stephen R. Buell, is a really interesting comic book, which I read today, about the second coming of Jesus. It is published by Lost In The Dark Press, with some other dark-looking comics out and coming out, including American Juice, Alien Echo and Fragile Prophet. My dad got a limited edition version of Watching the Watchmen.

Wacom was showing of some tablets with Macs, and I tried out a huge one, I think it was the Clintiq 21UX, but I’m not sure. (My dad drew the funny-, but interesting-, lookin’ one on top of mine)

Manga Start had a booth where they had printed sketches for chibis and puppies and people could color them in or add to them. This is what I did to mine. We also learned about the San Francisco Cartoon Museum’s benefit showing of Watchmen on March 5, but we probably won’t make it because of time, school and work.

Other comics I saw that I want to read: Various comics at Baby Tattoo, Strangeways: Murder Moon & The Thirsty and Atomika.

Other artists to check out: McCarty PhotoWorks, Zerofriends, JUSSCOPE, Wei Lun Tsai and Christian Alzmann.

Other things that I saw and I’m looking forward to: Cyborg Mice and 9 The Movie.

All in all, although I didn’t get to see any anime, see any of the special programs or panels r whatever, it was a pretty cool convention. Lots of pro and new comic artists/writers.

Peace Out Yo.
